SSL Certificates Explained: Why Every Website Needs HTTPS

What SSL certificates are, how they work, the different types (DV, OV, EV), and why Google requires HTTPS. Plus how SpectraHost handles SSL automatically.

If you've ever noticed the padlock icon next to a website address in your browser, you've seen SSL in action. It's one of those things most people never think about — until it's missing, and a big red "Not Secure" warning scares visitors away.

Here's what SSL actually does, why every website needs it, and how SpectraHost handles it so you don't have to.

    What Is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a technology that encrypts the connection between a visitor's browser and your web server. When SSL is active, your site loads over HTTPS instead of HTTP — the "S" stands for "secure."

In practical terms, encryption means that anything a visitor types on your site — passwords, contact form messages, credit card numbers — gets scrambled during transmission. Even if someone intercepts the data, they can't read it.

The technical name for the modern version is actually TLS (Transport Layer Security), but everyone still calls it SSL. They mean the same thing for everyday purposes.

How SSL Works (The Simple Version)

When someone visits your site, their browser and your server do a quick handshake:

    • The browser asks the server for its SSL certificate
    • The server sends the certificate, which includes a public encryption key
    • The browser verifies the certificate is valid and trusted
    • Both sides agree on a shared encryption key for the session
    • All data flows back and forth encrypted

This entire process takes milliseconds. Your visitors never notice it happening.

    Types of SSL Certificates

Not all SSL certificates are the same. There are three main types, differing in how much verification is involved:

    Domain Validated (DV)

The most common type. The certificate authority verifies that you control the domain — that's it. DV certificates are issued in minutes and provide the same encryption strength as more expensive options. This is what most websites need.

    Organization Validated (OV)

The certificate authority verifies your organization's identity in addition to domain ownership. This takes a day or two. OV certificates don't look different to visitors in most browsers, but they contain your company name in the certificate details.

    Extended Validation (EV)

The most thorough verification. The certificate authority checks legal documents, physical address, and operational status. EV certificates used to show a green company name in the browser bar, but most browsers have stopped displaying that distinction. They're primarily used by banks and large enterprises.

For the vast majority of websites, a DV certificate provides the same encryption and the same padlock icon. That's what SpectraHost includes free with every plan.

    Why Google Requires HTTPS

Since 2014, Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal. Sites with SSL rank higher than equivalent sites without it. In 2018, Chrome started marking all HTTP sites as "Not Secure" — and other browsers followed.

The message is clear: HTTPS is the baseline, not a bonus feature. If your site doesn't have SSL, you're hurting your search rankings and actively driving visitors away with browser warnings.

    What Happens Without SSL

Running a website without SSL in 2026 has real consequences:

    • Browser warnings — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all display "Not Secure" for HTTP sites
    • Lower search rankings — Google deprioritizes HTTP pages in search results
    • Lost trust — visitors see the warning and leave before they interact with your content
    • Data exposure — form submissions, login credentials, and personal information travel unencrypted
    • Compliance issues — regulations like GDPR require appropriate security measures for personal data

    How SpectraHost Handles SSL

On SpectraHost, SSL works automatically. When you add a domain to your hosting account, a free DV certificate is issued and installed without any action on your part. Renewals happen automatically too — you never have to worry about an expired certificate breaking your site.

If you need an OV or EV certificate for compliance reasons, you can install one through your hosting control panel. But for most sites — blogs, business sites, portfolios, online stores — the included DV certificate is all you need.
